Curry-osity
As a geek…I work with a lot of Indian-origin people. That might not be the most PC thing to say, but get over yourself, its not the point of this post…
The point is…I had a conversation with one of them at work today about a trip he is taking in May. The conversation went like this:
Me: Oh a vacation! Where are you going
Him: To India
Me: Oh lovely. To visit your family?
Him: Yes…..and,….to get married
Me: OH! Wait…didn’t you tell me last year that you were the ‘permanent bachelor type’ and weren’t interested in getting married when the 3 other Indian people you work with were all flying back to India to get married? Didn’t you say arranged marriages were not for you and that you weren’t ready?
Him: Yes…but it’s not just about me. It’s about my family and her family and me.
Me: Do you know her?
Him: Yes for 2 months now
Me: Do you like her?
Him: Yes I wouldn’t agree to marry her if I didn’t
Me: Have AGREED to marry her? You mean you didn’t ask her?
Him: No that’s not the way it works
Me: (Speechless while he laughed)
My point is that the woo-ing process (the courtship period if you will) for different walks of life is beyond my realm of understanding. I will stick to the bouquet of red roses and chocolate covered strawberries sent to me to win me over while we get to know each other tyvm. I want to marry my best friend and someone who gets along with my family, the person I entrust with my innermost secrets…not the one my parents kinda like, who I hope like hell we enjoy being around each other and who I’ll be stuck with after they are dead and gone.
~Cheers to you my brave co-worker. I wish you all the best.
